How to use this manual

Roadside is the control panel behind your store's website. You use it to change your hours, add a product, answer a customer's message, check an online order and see how many people visited this week. The routine jobs take a few minutes, and you can do them between customers.

Dirt Road Software looks after the website itself: its design and its technical upkeep. You look after what it says. If you want something the panel cannot change, such as a new photo at the top of the home page, you ask for it through Website changes and we do it.

How to use this manual

You do not have to read it front to back. Read Chapter 1 once, then go to the job in front of you. The Where to find each screen page lists every screen in the panel with the chapter that explains it.

The screenshots show one store, Baker Feed & Country Store, set up with made-up customers and orders. This manual calls it the sample store. Your menu may show a little more or less than the pictures, because it depends on your role and on what your plan includes.

A bar like the one above starts every section that has a screen of its own. It shows where to click in the left-hand menu and who can use the screen.

Words to know
A word you may not know
Boxes like this explain a technical word the first time it comes up in a chapter. The glossary repeats them all.
Good to know

A shortcut, or a fact that saves you a phone call.

Careful

Something your customers will see, or something that cannot be undone.

Words in bold, like Save, are labels exactly as they appear on screen. Orange numbers on a screenshot match the numbered list under it. When this manual says press, it means a button or a link. Choose is for lists and round buttons, tick is for a square box, and type is for a field.

Who this manual is for

Your role decides what you see in the menu. The Store owner and the Manager run the store day to day, and most of this manual is written for them. A Manager can do nearly everything a Store owner can. The Store owner also opens Account and Billing and adds or removes team members. The Manager also reads the audit log, which is the list of who changed what. Staff and Read only people have shorter menus, for work at the counter and the shelves. Chapter 26, Your team and what each role can do shows every role side by side.

The bar at the top of each section tells you which roles can use that screen. If a screen in the manual is not in your menu, your role does not include it, and the Store owner can tell you why.

First edition, October 2026, written for Roadside 0.5.0. If a screen on your computer looks a little different from the picture, we have probably improved it since. Questions about this manual: support@dirtroadsoftware.com.
